South Plains College rodeo to open season Sept. 16-18 in Portales

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams will saddle up for the first time this season when they travel to Portales for the Eastern New Mexico University Rodeo Sept. 16-18 at the Lewis Cooper Arena.

South Plains will look to prove to be one of the top programs in the Southwest Region once again, following a year in which the Texans and Lady Texans each placed in the top 10 in the final region standings, and freshman Emery Mask qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo in barrel racing.

Head coach Kerry Doster, who led the Lady Texans to their fourth consecutive Western Junior College Athletic Conference title a year ago, is looking forward to building on the momentum his program gained last season.

"We have had two solid weeks of practice, and the kids have been showing up every day and doing what they are supposed to do," Doster said. "I've been really pleased with the work they have been putting in, and the results they are having. I'm looking forward to what our new kids are going to do, and we have quite a few returners coming back for us."

Action will get underway at 6 p.m. MST Thursday, as the ENMU Rodeo is the first of five rodeos during the fall semester. South Plains will be in Alpine Sept. 23-25 for the Sul Ross State University Rodeo, followed by a trip to Vernon for the Vernon College Rodeo Sept. 30 – Oct. 2. SPC will then wrap up the fall with a trip to Canadian, TX for the Frank Phillips College Rodeo Oct. 7-9, followed by a trip to Lubbock for the Texas Tech University Rodeo Oct 28-30.
