Facilities

South Plains College is widely known for its recreational and athletic facilities, considered to be among the finest found on any community college campus in the state.

The crown jewel is the Texan Dome, a premier facility seating 3,300 persons and home of the Texans and Lady Texans since 1967.

The Texan Dome has also been the site for numerous college and high school basketball games, including some which have determined conference and regional championships.  SPC has hosted the UIL Regional 1-A high school boys and girls basketball tournament since the mid-1960s. The Dome is also the site for SPC graduation ceremonies each May. The Dome is sporting a new wood floor completed in the Summer of 2002. The Texans won their first Western Junior College Athletic Conference championship in the Texan Dome in 1971, and the Lady Texans followed with their first conference championship in the Dome in 1976.

The athletic arena was constructed for $690,000 in 1967 and now is valued at $4.3 million. A 10.875 square-foot addition was completed in August 1983.

Included in that annex are the Athletic Department offices, T-Club Letterman's Lounge and four racquetball courts. Also housed within the 88,642 square-foot Dome are a spacious and modern athletic training center, dressing rooms and team meeting rooms for the basketball teams.

A variety of other exercise and fitness options are available to students and public at SPC. The SPC Natatorium features a junior Olympic-size swimming pool. Water aerobics classes, swimming lessons for all ages and lap swimming time are offered, as well as other classes in water safety.

SPC also opened a new Physical Education Complex in the Fall of 2002. The 40,000 square foot facility features two full-sized basketball courts, weight training and cardiovascular rooms and physical education classrooms and faculty offices.

The SPC Track, located across from the Texan Dome, is home of the college's nationally acclaimed track and field program. The venue features an eight-lane Olympic-size track with a polyurethane running surface. A steeplechase pit, four jump pits, pole vault and high jump mat, bleacher seating for 1,500 spectators, press box and field house make it a premier facility.

Other facilities available on campus include 12 tennis courts and a softball and soccer field.
