SPC Track & Field Makes strong Showing In Arkansas

The South Plains College Track and Field teams made their third appearance of the 2016 Indoor season this weekend after competing in the Tyson Invitational at the University of Arkansas.

Following the weekend, the Texans and Lady Texans have now accumulated 68 national qualifying marks, and currently hold the top position in several events. The Texans were lead by DeVante Lacy in the 400 meters, who's time of 46.61 was good enough for first place, and currently sits as the fastest time in the NJCAA.

After being named the National Athlete of the Week, Hassan Abdi was once again up to the challenge in the men's 5000 meters, as his final time of 14:36.71 took the top position, and currently sits as the third fastest time in the NJCAA.

Nicholas Rotich also earned a top 10 finish in the 5000, as his final time of 15:18.62 was good enough for seventh place. In the men's mile run, Kelvin Keter would go on to place ninth for the Texans with a finishing time of 4:23.78. Keter would then take ninth in the 3000 meters with a final time of 8:48.19. Finally, in the men's long jump competition, Fabian Edoki placed sixth overall with a distance of 24' 1.75".

On the women's side, the Lady Texans distance medley relay team comprised of Kassidi Jones, Alexis Hyshaw, Latriceia Smith and Poro Gahkeove placed second overall with a finishing time of 13:16.07, just behind Texas A&M University. The Lady Texans would then go on to place 10th in the 4x400 relay, as Mauricia Prieto, Aaliyah Telesford, Deja Harrison and Medinah Spencer's final time of 3:45.20 currently sits as the second fastest time in the NJCAA.

In the women's 3000 meters, Poro Gohekove took ninth with a final time of 11:07.46. Saqukine Cameron's final time of 56.32 in the 400 meters is currently the fifth fastest time in the NJCAA, and Mauricia Prieto's final time of 24.62 in the 200 meters currently ranks as the eighth fastest time in the NJCAA.

The Texans and Lady Texans will be back in action once again this weekend, as they are set to host the South Plains College Invitational on February 19-20 in Levelland.
