SPC Track & Field Travels To Tyson Invitational

After another impressive outing from the South Plains College Track and Field teams last weekend at the Charlie Thomas Invitational in College Station, the Texans and Lady Texans are back on the road to compete in the Tyson Invitational at the University of Arkansas this weekend.

Following the Conclusion of the Charlie Thomas Invitational a week ago, the Texans and Lady Texans have 60 performances that qualify for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships after just two meets. The men finished fourth overall, just behind Texas A&M, Clemson and Baylor University. The Lady Texans finished 11th overall, with Texas A&M, Arkansas and the University of Clemson taking the top three spots.

Hassan Abdi impressed once again in the men's 3000 meters, as his final time of 8:21.11 was good enough for fourth place and also set a new South Plains school record, and currently sits as the fastest time in the NJCAA.

Abdi would then go on to take the top spot in the men's 5000 meters, as his final time of 14:49.67 put him ahead of Clemson's Clayton Wilson and Rice University's Marco Ruiz. Abdi was named the National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association after his record breaking performance.

Robert Dunning tied the South Plains school record after his second place finish in the 60 hurdles, and Fabian Edoki went on to place third in the long jump competition. Fletecher Sherrard would go on to place fourth overall in the triple jump for the Texans, while Saahir Bethea took fourth place in the long jump for the Lady Texans.
