Steve Green - Head Coach – South Plains College

Steve Green begins his 23rd season leading the South Plains College Texan basketball program, amassing an overall coaching record of 706 wins and 195 losses, including a record of 552 wins and 152 losses at South Plains. During the 2021-2022 season, Green joined elite company, winning his 700th career game as the Texans defeated Clarendon College 90-71 on Feb. 14 in Levelland. 

Tabbed the NJCAA Men's Basketball National Coach of the Year three times during his tenure in Levelland, Green was inducted into the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on March 16, 2015. 

Building South Plains into a perennial power over the past two decades, Green has led the Texan basketball program to the NJCAA Men's Basketball National Tournament 12 times, capturing the 2008, 2012, and 2018 national titles, becoming just the fourth coach to win three national championships. The Texans also earned national runner-up honors during the 2014-2015 season. 

During his tenure, Green has also led the Texans to eight conference titles and seven regional championships. In 2012, Coach Green’s team went 36-0, claiming their second NJCAA National Championship, becoming just the sixth time in NJCAA history to go unbeaten en route to the NJCAA Men's Basketball National Championship.

During the 2018 season, the Texans ran the table as they knocked off conference foe Odessa College in the Region V title game to earn an automatic berth to the 2018 NJCAA Men's Basketball National Tournament. The Texans went on to win five straight in Hutch including a 98-95 victory over Southern Idaho to capture the program's third national championship.

Green made his NJCAA head-coaching debut at Howard College in 1988. In his three seasons there he produced two WJCAC titles, one regional championship, and an overall record of 81-19. Following his time in Big Spring, Green led Midland College to a 73-24 record, a region championship, and an appearance at the National Tournament garnering an eighth-place finish.

Green is a graduate of Oklahoma Christian University.
