Texans Fall to Hill in Overtime after Epic Comeback

BROWNWOOD— Despite overcoming a 16-point first half deficit, the South Plains College Texans fell in overtime to Hill College 90-85 in the Region V tournament at the Brownwood Coliseum Wednesday afternoon.

Not without controversy.

The Texans trailed the Rebels by six points with 49 seconds remaining. Following a timeout by head coach Steve Green, the Texans forced three consecutive turnovers, taking the lead with under a second remaining after Jerron Love hit an eight-foot jumper from the left corner to give the Texans the lead, 82-81.

Following the conversion, a technical foul was called on the Texan' bench, for what the referees said was excessive celebration from the players with time remaining on the game clock.

The Rebels were awarded two free-throws. Mike Mayhew would miss the front end free-throw, but converted on the second attempt to tie the game at 82, and send the contest into overtime. Hill would go on an 8-3 run in the final five minutes of the contest, escaping with a five-point win.

Marlon Jones finished his final game for South Plains with 26 points and 14 rebounds, shooting 10-of-11 from the field and was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Michael Wolfe finished with 15 points and six boards for South Plains, while Jerron Love and Deontae North each had 10.

The Texans finished the season with a record of 21-9 on the year.
