Mask wins barrel racing, Lady Texans capture women's team title at Texas Tech University Rodeo

LUBBOCK — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams competed in their final rodeo of the fall semester over the weekend, as the Lady Texans totaled 230 points to capture the women's team title at the Texas Tech University Rodeo Saturday at Cook's Garage.

Emery Mask, who qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo a year ago, won the barrel racing event, totaling 160 points for SPC. Mask turned in a time of 17.33 in the long round, followed by a 17.16 in the finals to finish with a 34.49 average.

South Plains added 70 points in goat tying, as Samantha Taylor placed fourth overall. Taylor clocked a 7.3 in the long round and a 7.9 in the finals to finish with a 15.2 average. Savanah Nelson also qualified for the finals in goat tying, taking eighth overall. Nelson posted a 7.6 in the long round and an 8.7 in the finals to finish with a 15.8 average.

Logan Kenline represented the Texans in the steer wrestling finals, placing ninth overall. Kenline turned in a time of 4.0 in the long round but no timed in the finals, totaling 30 points for the Texans.

SPC will be back in the arena Feb. 24-26 at the Odessa College Rodeo, followed by a trip to Sweetwater for the Ranger College Rodeo March 24-26.
