The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan rodeo teams were back in action over the weekend at the Vernon College rodeo in Vernon, Texas, which saw both teams place in the top five in their respected divisions.

The Texans placed fourth overall with 240 total points, with Kade Sherwood and Chet Boren being the two top point getters for South Plains. Tarleton State University placed first with 480 points, while New Mexico Junior College placed second with 340, and Western Texas placed third with 270.

Sherwood went on to place first in the team roping competition after running a long time of 5.3 and a short time of 7.3, earning 160 points. In men's steer wrestling, Boren would tie for fourth place with his final point tally of 80, while Cameron McCarley took sixth for the Texans in men's steer wrestling with 50 points.

The Lady Texans continue to prove to be one of the top teams in the region as they finished fourth overall with a final score of 130 points. Eastern New Mexico University took first with a final tally of 322.5, while West Texas A&M University placed second with 180, followed by Tarleton's third place finish and final score of 170.

Rainy Robinson placed fourth overall in barrel racing after running a long time of 17.3 and a short time of 17.17, finishing the event with 80 points. Megan Burbidge went on to place third in the goat tying event with a final point total of 80, while Avery Gonzales took seventh in breakaway roping with 50 points.

"Rainy has really stepped up with her barrel horse, and Megan has really done well with her goat tying," South Plains head coach Kerry Doster said. "Those two girls have really stepped up from last year and become leaders, and I'm really pleased with them. Chet has been doing really well for us on our men's team, and I think he will keep doing well.

"Zack Kirkpatrick in calf roping is outstanding, and has a lot of natural ability and ropes really well, and I think he's going to get going and that will help the rest of our men's team. We've got the first three rodeos down, and we got a week off, so we can kind of settle down and come into Clarendon pretty strong."

South Plains will be back in action on Thurs. Oct. 13, when they travel to Clarendon, Texas, for the Clarendon College rodeo.
