Lady Texans take first at Alpine rodeo

The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan rodeo teams traveled to Alpine, Texas over the weekend to compete in the Sul Ross State University rodeo, which saw the Lady Texans take first place overall among 17 teams.

The Lady Texans compiled 152.5 team points, with Tarleton State University taking second with 150 points, and West Texas A&M University placing third with 140 points.

Sophomore Rainy Robinson placed second in women's barrel racing with her final tally of 145 points. Avery Gonzales tied for fourth in breakaway roping with her score of 7.5, while Baylee Henderson placed fifth in women's goat tying with a final score of 40 points.

"There's a lot of girls in the region who are really good, and we just happened to be on top this weekend," South Plains head coach Kerry Doster said. "Rainy Robinson finished second in the barrel racing after winning the fast time in the short round, so it helped us out pretty good."

The Texans went on to finish 12th overall in the men's division with 95 total points. Tarleton took first with 592 points, while West Texas A&M placed second with 245, and New Mexico Junior College took third with 222.

Chet Boren put together another solid performance in men's steer wrestling, finishing second overall with his final point total of 95. Boren increased his point total by 10 after finishing fifth a week ago at Eastern New Mexico University with a final score of 85 points.

"Our bulldogger Chet Boren did pretty good and finished in second place, and I think he should be leading the regional standings now," Doster said. "We're ready to go to Vernon and take this momentum with our women's team, and kind of get a spark with our men's team."

South Plains will be back in action this week as they are set to travel to Vernon, Texas, for the Vernon College Rodeo, which runs from Sept. 29 – Sept. 30.
