Texans, Lady Texans make season debut in Portales

The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan rodeo teams made their 2016 debut this weekend on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico.

The Lady Texans entered the season as the defending Western Junior College Athletic Conference champions after capturing their second conference crown a year ago. They would go on to finish the weekend with a final point tally of 55. Avery Gonzales went on to finish fourth overall in the women's breakaway roping competition, earning the Lady Texans 55 points, while Alex Odle finished sixth overall in barrel racing with a final score of 30 points.

The Texans were led by Chet Boren, who went on to place fifth overall in the men's steer wrestling event, finishing the evening with 85 total points for the Texans. Coy Surrett put together an impressive second place finish in the tiedown roping competition, finishing with 120 points for South Plains.

The Texans team roping duo of Riley Hayes and Hadley Cloward took second place overall with their final score of 105 points for South Plains. Chase Wilson went on to finish eighth overall in men's steer wrestling, finishing with a final point total of 20.

South Plains will be back in action again this weekend as they are set to travel to Alpine, Texas to compete on the campus of Sul Ross State University. Action is set to begin on Thursday, Sept. 22, and will conclude on Saturday, Sept. 24.
