Lady Texans Take First at Odessa Rodeo

ODESSA—The South Plains College rodeo teams traveled to Odessa over the weekend to compete in their first competition of the spring season.

The Texans came into the spring ranked 13th in the Southwest region with a total of 405 points, while they Lady Texans began their campaign ranked third in the region, just behind Eastern New Mexico University and Texas Tech University.

The Lady Texans Shay Spitz looked to be in mid-season form in the women's barrel racing event, taking the top spot with a final point total of 180, with Tarleton State's Ashleigh Baugh placing second with 110 points. Spitz ran a long time of 15.02, and a time of 14.09 in the finals, good enough for first in both sets.

Kortney McReynolds racked up 50 points in the barrel racing event after running a long time of 15.32, and a finals time of 15.26, good enough for an overall average of 30.58. The Lady Texans would go on to win the overall women's competition with a final point total of 310, nearly 40 points better than Tarleton's 273.33.

On the men's side, Tarleton took the top position with a total of 510 points, followed by Western Texas' final total of 395. West Texas A&M would place third with a score of 370, while Clarendon's total of 230 points was good enough for fourth place.

The Texans were unable to place in this weekend's rodeo, but will look to bounce back when they travel to Ranger College on March 17-19, followed up by a trip to Western Texas College on March 31.
