LEVELLAND — The South Plains College women's basketball team had four players score in double figures Saturday, shooting a 49 percent clip from the field in a 112-59 rout of Coastal Bend College at the Texan Dome.
"I was pleased with how our team responded," South Plains head coach Ara Baten said. "We were disappointed from last night, especially to get out to such a big lead, and today was much better for us. Our defense was good for the first three quarters, and we got a little sloppy in the fourth quarter, so we will clean that up."
The Lady Texans improve to 1-1 on the season and will be on the road next weekend when they head east to take on Tyler on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. South Plains will then match up with Angelina at noon on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Maya Young led all scorers with 21 points and four boards, connecting on eight of 15 shots. Isabel Joai chipped in six of eight shots from the floor, totaling 17 points in 18 minutes. Bella Belong poured in 13 to go along with five boards, while Chisom Oguego netted 12 points and three assists.
"Our guards were better today, but we still need to get better, and we need to work on making the extra pass and getting the ball inside out," Baten said. "We have some kids who can make shots, but we still have to penetrate the basketball. We can't just be content to throw it around and take the first available three, and that's something we will work on. We're going to be on the road next weekend, and it's going to be two great games against really good competition, and we're going to stay in Texas and play two of the best teams in Region 14 and Region 5."
