Top-seeded Lady Texans best Hill College 59-50 Thursday to advance to Region V Tournament semifinals

WOLFFORTH — Jennifer Silva and Celia Sumbane each recorded a double-double Thursday night as the top-seeded South Plains College women's basketball team bested Hill College 59-50 at the Tiger Pit to advance to the region semifinals.

South Plains will square off with second-seeded McLennan at 7 p.m. on Friday in Wolfforth. The contest will stream live at spctexans.com and can be heard locally on KLVT Radio AM1230.

Silva led all scorers with 18 points and 10 rebounds over 31 minutes, connecting on nine of 16 shots from the field and also blocked four shots. Sumbane netted 14 points and 10 boards, dropping in six of 12 shots from the floor to go along with three assists and two blocked shots.

Daiysha Brown finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists for South Plains, connecting on six of nine attempts and was four of five from distance over 39 minutes. Sophomore Martyna Czescik poured in six points and snagged five rebounds over 32 minutes as the Lady Texans shot 42.2 percent from the floor in the contest.

Hill netted a slight advantage inside the paint, outscoring SPC 36-30 in the interior, but South Plains took advantage of 11 turnovers from the Lady Rebels, which resulted in 11 points for the Lady Texans on the offensive end. Hill shot 34.9 percent from the floor but went just two-for-15 from distance and four of nine from the free throw line.
