No. 3 Lady Texans rout Frank Phillips 121-47 Monday

LEVELLAND — The third-ranked South Plains College women's basketball team had eight payers score in double figures Monday as they pounded Frank Phillips College 121-47 at the Texan Dome.

The Lady Texans improve to 28-1 on the year and 12-1 in the WJCAC and will play for a conference championship on Thursday night when they host Odessa College at 5:45 p.m. on Ameriprise Financial VIP Night at the Dome.

"We had 51 made baskets on 32 assists with eight people in double figures which is definitely hard to guard," South Plains head coach Cayla Petree said. "We just tried to get out and run and have a good tempo and shoot high percentage shots and we were pretty effective today."

Sophomore Sarah Shematsi led the Lady Texans on the offensive end, dropping in 19 points and hauled in seven boards, finishing 9 of 12 from the floor and was 3 of 5 from the perimeter. Freshman Ka'Lia Smith bucketed 17 points and 11 rebounds as the Lady Texans shot a 73 percent clip from the floor and a season-high 64 percent from the 3-point line.

"We've been playing on the road for what seems like a month, and we needed a little shot of energy like this and we had a great crowd tonight," Petree said. "Everyone should have great confidence after today and the entire team had a great game. Everyone contributed which makes it fun for the entire team."

Freshman Johanna Teder tallied 15 points and four rebounds on a perfect 6 of 6 shooting including a 3-for-3 mark from distance. Sophomore Ocean Robin was 7 of 8 from the floor, netting 15 points while Caroline Germond went off for 14 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds for the Lady Texans. Grace Hunter and Ruth Koang each finished with 14 points with the Lady Texans scoring 51 buckets on 32 assists.

"We have to come ready to play Thursday and we have nothing but respect for Odessa," Petree said. "They have a great program and we have to have a great three days of practice. We have to be focused and stay locked in and have a good night and finish this thing out."
