BIG SPRING — The top-ranked South Plains College women's basketball team placed five players in double figures Thursday as they dismantled Howard College 83-24 at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.

With the win, South Plains improves to 24-0 on the season and 8-0 in the WJCAC and will be back on the hardwood on Monday when they travel to Snyder to take on Western Texas College at 5:45 p.m.

Asia McCoy bucketed 6 of 8 shots against the Lady Hawks leading all scorers with 16 points and also snagged 10 boards in 28 minutes of action. Oceane Robin chipped in 13 points coming off the bench for the Lady Texans, sinking 6 of 9 attempts from the field over 32 minutes. Sophomore Caroline Germond dropped in 12 points on 5 of 6 shooting and dished out a game-high five assists.

Sophomore center Ruth Koang poured in 12 points and snagged five rebounds, connecting on 6 of 8 shots from the floor while freshman Ka'Lia Smith netted 10 points and pulled in six rebounds. South Plains shot over 61 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent from distance while holding the Lady Hawks to just seven points in the second half.

South Plains tallied 52 points inside the paint, scored 28 points off 26 turnovers from Howard and netted 14 points on second-chance opportunities. The Lady Texans forced the Lady Hawks to shoot a 16.3 percent clip from the field and a 20 percent mark from distance as they controlled both sides of the floor.

The Lady Texans have proven to be the top defensive team in the country this season as they are giving up just 48.5 points per game which rank first in the country. South Plains is forcing their opponents to shoot just 31 percent from the field this season, the fourth-best defensive mark amongst all teams to date.
