McCoy's 22 points, nine boards lead #1 Lady Texans past Frank Phillips 85-55 Thursday

BORGER — The top-ranked South Plains College women's basketball team placed three players in double figures as they pounded Frank Phillips College 85-55 Thursday.

With the win, the Lady Texans improve to 22-0 on the year and 6-0 in the WJCAC and will be back on the road on Monday in Odessa to take on the Lady Wranglers with tip slated for 5:45 p.m.

South Plains had its way on both ends of the floor, shooting 62.7 percent from the field and knocked down nine 3s while forcing the Lady Plainsmen to shoot just 31.7 percent and 6 of 31 from the perimeter.

Asia McCoy dominated the interior for South Plains, dropping in 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, finishing a perfect 9-for-9 from the field and was 4 of 4 from the free throw line. LSU signee Sarah Shematsi poured in 22 points and four rebounds, connecting on 9 of 14 shots from the field and was 4-for-7 from distance for South Plains.

Freshman Ka'Lia Smith tacked on 13 points and six rebounds for the Lady Texans, finishing 3 of 4 from the floor and was a percent 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. TCU signee Caroline Germond was her usual self, totaling seven points, nine assists and eight rebounds while Grace Hunter chipped in six points and handed out five assists for South Plains.

The Lady Texans dominated the glass, outrebounding Frank Phillips 42-19 in the contest. South Plains netted 34 points inside the paint, receiving 15 points from their bench and forced 12 turnovers resulting in 14 points on the offensive end of the floor.

Amaya Johns led Frank Phillips with 20 points and four rebounds, dropping in 7 of 15 shots from the field and was 2 of 5 from the 3-point line. Alexys Grice netted 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists, shooting 6 of 22 from the floor and was just 2 of 12 from distance.
