No. 8 Lady Texans clip No. 23 Cochise College 62-60 Monday in Tucson

TUCSON, AZ — Sarah Shematsi scored 19 points and corralled eight rebounds as the No. 8-ranked South Plains College women's basketball team clipped No. 23 Cochise College 62-60 Monday in their opening round contest of the Pima College Classic.

With the win, South Plains improves to 15-1 on the year and will return to the hardwood on Tuesday at 1 p.m. MST against Arizona Western College.

Shematsi finished 8 of 17 from the field over 34 minutes as the Lady Texans shot 43.8 percent from the field in the contest. Sophomore Keke Hunter recorded 15 points and 12 boards, sinking 6 of 14 attempts from the floor while Gabbie Green bucketed 11 points, five rebounds, and two assists.

South Plains created opportunities with the rock, forcing 17 turnovers on the defensive end and held Cochise (9-3) to a 34..5 percent shooting mark from the field as the Apaches were just 2 of 10 from the 3-point line in the second half.

South Plains won the battle on the glass, outrebounding their counterpart 39-32 inside. South Plains' Caroline Germond and Romola Dominguez combined for 10 points while Ruth Koang netted three points and five boards and Oceane Robin finished with two points and three rebounds.

Kayla Harris led Cochise with 14 points, chipping in 6 of her 10 attempts while Awe Keita tallied 13 points and three assists and Yemiyah Morris ended the night with 10 points and four rebounds.
