Hunter's double-double leads No.15 Lady Texans past Tohono O'odham 75-59 Thursday in Odessa

ODESSA — Kiki Hunter netted 16 points and pulled in 16 rebounds and the Lady Texas placed four scorers in double figures as the No.15 ranked South Plains College women's basketball team thumped Tohono O'odham 75-59 Thursday afternoon at the OC Sports Center to improve to 1-0 on the season.

South Plains will look to stay perfect on Friday when they tip off against Colorado Northwestern at 4 p.m. in Odessa.

"We played well in the first half and I thought we came out very aggressive and ready to play," South Plains head coach Cayla Petree said. "Our defense was flying around and getting a lot of deflections off the ball which led to some easy buckets in our offensive transition. We got in a little foul trouble in the second half, but it was a good day overall and gave us some things to look at and improve on."

Hunter, a sophomore from Hot Springs, Arkansas knocked down six of her nine attempts from the field and was 4-for-5 from the charity stripe in 19 minutes of action. Sophomore guard Chantel Govan tallied 13 points, three assists and two steals, chipping in 4 of 10 shots from the floor including a pair of 3s in the front half as the Lady Texans raced to a 40-16 advantage at the midway point.

"Kiki is a better offensive rebounder than defensive, and she definitely has a nose for the basketball," Petree said. "They were in a zone today which forced us to shoot a lot of 3s, and Kiki was able to clean up a lot of those missed shots and found some easy buckets. It's always good to get a win and there are some things we can clean up, and overall we feel good about today and we're excited to play again tomorrow."

Freshman Oceane Robin, a six-foot guard from France poured in 12 points, dished out three assists and picked up a pair of steals in her first outing for South Plains. Denver native Romola Dominguez poured in 10 points to go along with four assists, hitting on four of her 10 attempts from the floor.

South Plains finished the contest 29 of 65 (44.6%) from the field and controlled the glass, outrebounding their counterpart 40-25 in the blocks. South Plains forced the Lady Jegos to shoot just 31 percent from the field as the Lady Texans netted 27 points on 23 forced turnovers.

Tohono O'odham's Samantha Nunez led all scorers with 19 points, connecting on six of her 10 attempts and was 3-for-5 from the perimeter. Cherlee Collins finished with 15 points for the Lady Jegos (0-1) while Elisa Gonzales tallied eight and Ana Martinez finished with six.
