LEVELLAND — Despite placing two players in double figures, the South Plains College women's basketball team fell to Clarendon College 65-52 on Thursday night at the Texan Dome.

Trailing 35-34 with 2:11 left in the third quarter following a layup from South Plains' Gabbie Green, Clarendon answered with an 18-3 run capped by a Chauntel Acosta 3-ball with 6:02 left in the third.

Christina Baker, who finished with 12 points and was 5 of 11 from the field, brought the Lady Texans within eight with 1:54 to play, but Clarendon responded with consecutive buckets in their next two possessions, part of a 29 point fourth quarter.

"We've got to start valuing the basketball," South Plains head coach Cayla Petree said. "To turn the ball over 15 times in a half, you can't win. We've got to be more efficient with the basketball, and we've got to get good looks. We're too much one-on-five basketball, where four people stand and watch and one person tries to go make a play."

South Plains(14-8, 1-5) posted a 35 percent mark from the field and struggled from the perimeter, knocking down just 4 of 18 attempts. Clarendon(19-3, 3-3) shot 35 percent from the field and 20 percent from 3, committing 22 turnovers over the course of the game.

South Plains' Chantel Govan scored a team-high 15 points to go along with five boards and two assists. Haleigh Hill and Mikayla Kuehne each chipped in seven points while Maddie Dorris, Ravae Payne and Green each had three.

Clarendon's Ja'Vonda Daniels led all scorers with 18 points, 13 of which came at the charity stripe as she was 13 of 14 from the line. Acosta netted 15 points over 31 minutes and Aleiyah Brantley bucketed 10 points and grabbed six boards.

South Plains will look to get back in the win column on Monday when they travel to Odessa with tipoff slated for 5:45 p.m. The game will be streaming live at spctexans.com and Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action.
