Lady Texans seeking fourth straight win on Saturday in Temple

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College women's basketball team is set to return to the hardwood on Saturday when they travel to central Texas for a matchup with Temple College with tipoff slated for 2 p.m. 

South Plains enters the weekend with a 13-4 record and winners of three of its last four games. The Lady Texans recently returned from Arizona, competing in the Bill Culver Memorial Classic in Scottsdale where the went 3-1 and ended the trip with a 72-59 rout of Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Chandler.

The Lady Texans averaged 67.75 points per game during the road trip and 64.4 points per game on the year. South Plains is shooting 43.4 percent from the field after 17 games including 32 percent from the perimeter and 66 percent from the charity stripe. Second chances have come at a premium as the Lady Texans average 32.5 rebounds per game and have dished out 11.2 assists per game.

Mikayla Kuehne leads South Plains in scoring with a 13. 5 points per game average shooting 43 percent from the field and 41 percent from 3. Gabbie Green is second on the team with 10.4 points per game, followed by freshman La'Praisjah Johnson who averages 10.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

Temple enters the contest with a 7-6 record and winners of two of their last three games. The Lady Leopards are averaging 74.8 points per game, shooting 42.1 percent from the field and just 28 percent from 3. Temple has averaged 38.2 rebounds and 18.9 assists per game and are 3-3 at home this season.

Temple is led by sophomore Kristen Nelson who averages 9.8 points and 4.5 boards per game. Makayla Gatewood and Kiana Reed each average 8.6 points per game while Doriana Brown leads the team with 6.5 rebounds per game.

Following Saturday's contest, the Lady Texans will be back on the road on Monday, Jan. 8 when they travel to Big Spring and return to conference action when they take on Howard with tipoff slated for 5:45 p.m. Monday's game will be streaming live at spctexans.com as Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action.
