No. 16 Lady Texans down Lady Rattlers 122-36 on Thursday night at the Texan Dome

Levelland — The No. 16-ranked South Plains College women's basketball team placed six players in double figures to down the SWCID Lady Rattlers 122-36 on Thursday night at the Texan Dome.

South Plains shot 60 percent from the floor in the contest and 61 percent from 3 over 40 minutes. La'Praisjah Johnson and Christina Baker led all scorers with 19 apiece. Baker finished 9 of 11 from the field and corralled nine boards. Mikayla Kuehne and Chantel Govan each chipped in 14 points while Haleigh Hill totaled 12 points and four boards and McKenzie Taylor finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.  

"Coach told us to go out and focus on getting better and that's what we tried to do," Hill said. "We focused on taking good shots and getting rebounds and tried to work as a team tonight. We try to work hard in practice and carry that into the games. We have to keep being efficient with the ball and produce on both offense and defense."

The Lady Texans (6-1) jumped out to a commanding 31-9 lead after 10 minutes and eventually carried a 61-21 advantage into the half. South Plains shot 57 percent from the field and 44 percent from 3 in the first 20 minutes. Baker and Kuehne combined for 22 points in the first half as the Lady Texans outrebounded the Lady Rattlers 27-13 at the midway point.

"We try to believe in ourselves each time we step on the floor and get a little bit better every game," Baker said. "Coach Petree lets us know that our goal should be to win, graduate and move on to play at a Div. I school, and being that we're all freshmen we're trying to work and get to that level. We have no time to waste and we have to continue to stay focused and keep the goal in mind."

South Plains continued to execute on the offensive end outscoring the Lady Rattlers 33-7 in the third quarter. Govan and Hill combined for 18 points in the second half as the Lady Texans shot 62 percent from the floor and were a perfect 4-for-4 from 3. Thursday's win marks six straight for the Lady Texans who will look to stay in the win column on Friday when they tip off against Chandler-Gilbert at 5 p.m. at the Texan Dome.
