Lady Texans Fall To Midland

MIDLAND—The South Plains College Lady Texans fell to the Lady Chaparrals 56-53 on Thursday night in Midland.

South Plains was led in scoring by freshman Elizabeth Cera who finished the game with 17 points and was 4-for-7 from the 3-point line. Dabraisia Baty went 7-for-16 from the field and finished with 15 points for the Lady Texans, while Ramiah Henry was 6-for-8 from the floor and scored 13 points.

The Lady Chaps were led by Walnatia Wright who finished the contest with 24 points and nine boards, while Lisa Kaempf scored 10 points. Kayla Bretherton scored nine points for Midland, and Morgan Ashton chipped in seven.

South Plains (15-9, 3-5) shot 50 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes and went on to lead by as much as 15 points early on. The Lady Texans showed the ability to utilize the perimeter of the floor and also hauled in 32 rebounds inside, creating second chance opportunities on the offensive side of the ball.

Midland (20-3, 7-1) was granted 37 free-throw attempts to the Lady Texans 11, which gave the Lady Chaps a 21-7 advantage over the course of the game. Both teams would trade buckets early on in the second half and the Lady Texans would lead by five going into the final 10 minutes of the game. Midland would make a late surge in the final quarter, which turned out to be enough and allowed them to escape with a three-point win.

South Plains will look to get back in the win column on Monday, February 1 when they host Frank Phillips College at the Texan Dome, with tipoff set for 5:45 p.m.
