Levelland—The South Plains College Lady Texans fell to Midland in their conference opener 76-57 on Wednesday night at the Texan Dome in Levelland.

Despite leading for the majority of the contest and taking a 47-46 lead into the fourth quarter, the Lady Chaps went on a 21-4 run to begin the final frame and snuck out with a win.

Taylor Holley led the Lady Texans with 15 points including shooting 4-7 from three. Elizabeth Cera finished with 11 points, four assists and five boards for South Plains, while Aliezza Brown had nine points and three assists.

Midland's Lisa Kaemphf racked up 18 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Chaps, while Walnatia Wright finished with 14 points and 10 boards.

With both teams deadlocked at 17 after the first ten minutes of play, the Lady Texans went on an eight-point run early in the second quarter capped off by a three from Holley. After Midland cut the deficit to five, Holley once again knocked down a three, this time from the left wing to give SPC a 36-28 lead with just over a minute left before the half.

The beginning of second half saw the two teams trade buckets in the early minutes of the third quarter, with Midland's Toni Taylor knocking down a three from the right corner to trim the Lady Texans' lead to 41-40.

After the Lady Chaps took a 43-42 lead with 2:50 left in the third quarter, Holley converted on three straight free-throws for the Lady Texans after being fouled on a three from the top of the key, recapturing the lead for South Plains, 46-43.

With South Plains leading 47-46 heading into the final frame, Kayla Bretherton began Midland's fourth quarter surge with a long three from the corner to give the Lady Chaps a 49-47 lead with 9:36 remaining.

Midland would go on a 15-1 run over the first six minutes of the fourth thanks to consecutive threes from Wright and Morgan Ashton. The Lady Texans slowed down the Lady Chaps' attack utilizing a full-court press, but Midland was able to hold onto its lead and pick up their conference win on the year.

The Lady Texans will look to bounce back this weekend when they travel to Borger to take on Frank Phillips College at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
