Texan and Lady Texan basketball teams both open Region 5 Tournament vs Collin

LEVELLAND, Texas – Postseason play is scheduled to begin this week for both the Texan and Lady Texan basketball teams as the top-seeded SPC men will face Collin County at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. in the final contest of four quarterfinal games and the Lady Texans will play the second of four games Thursday, March 6 when they also take on Collin County at 2 p.m.

All games will be played at the Rip Griffin Center on the campus of Lubbock Christian University.

 

The Texans (26-4, 13-3 WJCAC) clinched sole possession of the conference championship in their season finale and will be tasked with defeating Collin County for the third time this season.

 

South Plains played the Cougars in back-to-back games over two weekends, defeating Collin 83-76 at the Texan Dome Nov. 23 before knocking them off again 91-80 in Plano Nov. 29.

 

Neither win came easy.  The Cougars built a 15-point first half lead at the Texan Dome and held a four-point halftime advantage the next weekend, but the Texans charged back in each instance.

 

If the Texans defeat Collin County they will then face the winner of Wednesday's 2 p.m. game between Western Texas and Hill College in the second semifinal game Friday at 2 p.m.

 

The Lady Texans (16-11, 10-4) also have experience against Collin County as they suffered a 71-63 setback Nov. 30 in Plano. 

 

The SPC women will face either New Mexico or Temple Friday, March 7, if they are able to avenge their Nov. 30 loss against the Lady Cougars.

 

Both the Texans and Lady Texans put three players each on the men's and women's all-conference teams.  Roderick Lawrence, Ryan Martin, and Andre Spight made the team for the men, while Jasmine Brainard, Alexius Dawn, and TaSheena Moore were members of the women's team.
