Lady Texans pick up big road win at Odessa

ODESSA, Texas – The South Plains College Lady Texan basketball team moved to within one-half game of conference leading New Mexico with a 64-60 road victory over the Lady Wranglers of Odessa College Thursday night.

Unlike their Jan. 14 loss at New Mexico, the Lady Texans (17-3, 4-1 WJCAC) had little trouble scoring in the beginning of this one, building a 13-point lead early in the game.

Leading 12-9 six minutes into the contest, the Lady Texans scored 10 straight, capped by a 15-foot jumper by Lindsey Lee.

Moments after an Odessa 3 cut the Lady Texan lead to 10, Sydney Hearn found Lee who answered with a 3-point bucket of her own, giving the Lady Texans a 25-12 advantage.

The Lady Wranglers (14-5, 4-2) quickly answered with a 13-1 scoring run and with 4:29 remaining in the first half of play, South Plains saw their lead dwindle to a single point, 26-25.

Sydney Hearn helped South Plains regain their composure, snagging her missed 10-footer and getting the put-back in the paint.  Jasmine Brainard made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe and Tasheena Moore sank a 3-pointer with 3:22 remaining to put the Lady Texans back up seven, 32-25.

With time winding down in the first half, it appeared the Lady Texans would head to the locker room with a nine-point advantage following a second chance bucket by Stephanie Moore.  However, as the final seconds ticked off, Odessa's Angenay Williams hit from just inside the 3-point line and the two teams completed the first half of play with SPC holding the 37-30 advantage.

After allowing Odessa to creep back to with six points in the opening minutes of the back half of play, Shea Myatt sandwiched a couple field goals around a 3 by Tasheena Moore and the Lady Texans once again led by 13.

Alexius Dawn helped contribute to the 7-0 run with two assists, finding Myatt wide open under the basket and then heaving a cross-court pass to Moore for the 3.

The seesaw game continued as Odessa once again got back to within four, before South Plains stretched the lead back to double-digits.

Leading 61-49 inside of four-minutes to play in the game, the Lady Texans would again put their guard down and allow Odessa to inch their way back into the game.  In just over three minutes, the Lady Wranglers outscored South Plains 11-1 to get to within two points with only 23-seconds left in the contest.

Following a timeout, Odessa quickly fouled Dawn on the inbounds pass.  Fortunately for the Lady Texans, however, the foul was only Odessa's sixth and SPC was allowed to throw the ball in again.

Dawn also received the second pass from Myatt, only this time was able to elude the Odessa defenders and milk precious seconds off before they could send her to the line for a 1-and-1.

Dawn made the front end, and then missed the second, which was snagged by the Lady Wranglers who hustled to their end of the court.  Before they could make an attempt to tie, Angenay Williams lost control of the ball, which Hearn claimed possession of to secure the win for South Plains.

Hearn was the game's leading scorer with 19 points.  Tasheena Moore added 18, making 7-of-10 shots from the field while playing the entire contest.

The Lady Texans will return to the court on Monday, Jan. 28 when they host the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen (9-11, 2-3 WJCAC) at 5:45 p.m. inside the friendly confines of the Texan Dome.  Live video of the game will be broadcast live at www.spctexans.com.

Holiday Inn Express of Levelland is the Monday night game sponsor and has donated two $75 gift certificates to the Levelland Time restaurant as well as other gift cards that will be awarded to fans in attendance throughout the contest.
