Lady Texans get first win over Midland since 2009

LEVELLAND – Stephanie Moore scored 13 of her team high 17 points in the second half and led three Lady Texans in double figures to help South Plains College to a second half rally and defeat the Midland College Lady Chaparrals 64-60 Thursday night at the Texan Dome.

The win snaps a six game losing streak versus Midland as South Plains had not defeated the Lady Chaps since a 55-52 victory on Feb. 16, 2009.

It did not come easy.

South Plains (14-2, 1-0) trailed 30-20 when the two teams returned to the court from halftime, but promptly went on a 17-4 scoring run that began with a 3-point field goal by Shea Myattand ended when Moore converted a free throw to complete a three-point play that put the Lady Texans up 37-34 less than six minutes into the second half.

Midland (13-5, 1-1) had no intention of letting the Lady Texans completely run away with the game, and the two teams seesawed back-and-forth over the next 12 minutes in which the game saw five tied scores.

With the game tied up at 58 and only 2:18 remaining in the game, Moore converted two more free throws.  After each team missed opportunities on their end of the court, Sydney Hearn all but put the game away with an extra effort in the paint that put the Lady Texans up four, 62-58.  Hearn drew a foul, but missed the free throw.

Moore converted a perfect 9-of-9 attempts at the free throw line.

The Lady Chaps still had a chance as Achiri Ade converted a field goal in the paint with 18-seconds on the clock and Midland quickly called timeout.

Following the timeout, Alexius Dawn turned the ball over and Midland called their final timeout as they had a chance to tie, or win, with only 13 seconds to go.

Ade missed two opportunities in the paint and South Plains regained possession of the ball.  Tasheena Moore was fouled on the inbounds and converted both free throws to take away any chance of Midland winning on a last second mid-court shot.

The victory is the seventh straight for the Lady Texans who have little time to savor their first defeat of Midland in nearly four years as they host Howard College (12-3, 1-1) Saturday before traveling to New Mexico JC Monday in Hobbs.

South Plains and Howard will square off at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Texan Dome.  Live stats and video will be available at www.spctexans.com with KLVT's Michael Wiiest calling the courtside action.

Mike Mamantov of Ameriprise Financial sponsored Thursday evening's game, providing a fajita dinner for all SPC employees in attendance.  Mr. Mamantov also had $100 door prizes at each halftime.  SPC rodeo coach Kerry Doster was the winner of the first drawing.  Lynne Cleavinger won the $100 bill during the men's halftime.
