Lady Texans knock off Pima in overtime, 70-67

TUCSON, Ariz. – The South Plains College Lady Texans never held a lead during regulation Friday afternoon against Pima College, but that did not keep them from escaping with their sixth consecutive victory as they prevailed, 70-67, in overtime.

Alexius Dawn and Tasheena Moore each recorded double-double performances to help SPC move to 13-2 as they now gear up for league action.

Dawn turned in game highs of 19-points, 10-assists, and eight steals while also nabbing six rebounds.  Moore was the game's second leading scorer with 16-points and also pulled down a game high 11 boards.

South Plains trailed by as many as six points in the first half, but battled back and went to the locker room down only one, 27-26.

Pima once again put some distance on the SPC women early in the second half.

Following a made bucket by Moore that tied the game at 35, Pima scored eight straight points to try to take control of the contest.  The Lady Texans quickly battled back and with less than two minutes remaining Dawn converted two free throws to tie the game for the ninth time, 58-58.

Following four defensive stands, the Lady Texans took control of the ball and called timeout with 22-seconds to go in the game.  With the shot clock off, they had time to set up for one last play to win the game, but a 3-point attempt by Dawn was off the mark, sending the game to overtime.

Jasmine Brainard gave South Plains their first lead of the game when Stephanie Mooretipped the ball in her direction to start the extra period.  Brainard chased the ball down and was able to convert an easy layup just four seconds into the extra period.

With only 16-seconds on the game clock and the game tied up at 67 apiece, Moore toed the free throw line with an opportunity to put her team up by two.  After making her first attempt, Moore missed the second but Brainard was there to pick up the rebound and found Dawn in the backcourt and was immediately fouled by a Lady Aztec player.

Dawn also converted 1-of-2, giving Pima one more opportunity.

Brainard pulled down a missed Pima field goal attempt and was sent to the line with only two seconds remaining.  Brainard made her first.  As she released her second attempt, the Pima coach was hollering 'timeout,' but SPC's Stephanie Moore came up with her third offensive rebound to seal the victory.

Moore also scored 10 points and had six rebounds total.

With the win, the Lady Texans will enter WJCAC conference play riding a six game winning streak when they host Midland College Thursday, Jan. 10 at 5:45 p.m.  Mike Mamantov of Ameriprise Financial is the game sponsor and will host a VIP dinner for SPC employees and their families.  Halftime drawings for cash prizes will also take place.
