Lady Texans overcome rocky start to take care of Frank Phillips
LEVELLAND - After a rocky start that saw the South Plains College Lady Texans fall into a 9-0 hole and trail by as many as 11 in the opening minutes of their contest with Frank Phillips College, the Lady Texans quickly gathered themselves and took care of business to win their fifth game in seven tries to improve the record in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference to 5-4. The Lady Texans now own a 11/2 game lead over Western Texas for the fourth and final spot to advance to the Region 5 tournament.

Trailing 14-5 7-minutes into the game, the Lady Texans then outscored the Lady Plainsmen 13-1 over the next several minutes, taking their first lead of the game with 7:03 remaining in the opening half thanks to a 3-point bucket by Ashley Roberts

South Plains never looked back and would take a 10 point lead to the locker room, 31-21.

The Lady Plainsmen would get to within seven points after a layup in the paint by Destiny Phillips in the opening minutes. Stephanie Moore then made 1-of-2 from the free throw line and after Roberts scored on a fast break South Plains would never lead by less than double-digits for the remainder of the game.

South Plains led by as many as 23 points with just over 4-minutes remaining in the game.

Roberts led all scorers with 20 points, making 8-of-12 from the field including 4-of-6 3-point shots. Sydney Hearn was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field, finishing with 15 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

The Lady Texans made 24-of-51 shots from the field and outrebounded Frank Phillips by a 48-27 margin.

South Plains (8-17, 5-4 WJCAC) will look to continue their hot streak when they host New Mexico Junior College Monday, February 20. The Lady Texans fell to New Mexico 63-41 January 26. Both teams will have plenty to play for as South Plains looks to hold on to a play-off spot and New Mexico (23-3, 7-1) clings to a one-half game lead in the WJCAC.

Mike Mamantov and Ameriprise Financial will be hosting a VIP dinner for South Plains College employees Thursday evening. Additionally, one employee will win a monetary award in a drawing that will take place at halftime of the Texan game.

South Plains' game versus the T-Birds is scheduled for a 5:45 p.m. tip-off and live video can be accessed at www.spctexans.com. KLVT 1230 AM will carry audio of the game over the radio and can also be accessed at www.klvtradio.com with KLVT's Michael Wiiest calling the courtside action.
