Midland College hands Lady Texans 77-48 defeat

LEVELLAND - Sophomore Stephanie Moore had another steady game, finishing with 10 points and seven rebounds, but she and the rest of the Lady Texans had a tough time stopping Midland College in the paint as the Lady Chaparrals came away with a 77-48 victory over South Plains Thursday night at the Texan Dome.

The Lady Texans have now lost seven in a row to Midland and have not defeated the Lady Chaps since a 55-52 victory at the Texan Dome on February 16, 2009.

Moore tied the score at 15 apiece about midway through the first half, but Midland responded with a 10-0 scoring run and went on to take a 14 point lead to the locker room, 39-25.

The Lady Texans could not change the momentum in the second half, either. Midland increased their advantage to 22 points in the opening 10 minutes of the second half and led by as many as 30 before settling with the 29 point victory.

Shea Myatt was the only other Lady Texan to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points.

Conference scoring leader Ashley Roberts was held to four points, the third consecutive game she has scored less than five points.

South Plains (6-17, 3-4) still controls their destiny as far as advancing to next month's Region 5 tournament is concerned and received some help with Western Texas defeating Howard College Thursday night. The Lady Texans hold a one game lead over the Lady Hawks and Lady Westerners and have also defeated both in conference play.

SPC will now set their sights on Monday night's game at Odessa College (17-6, 6-1). The Lady Texans lost a heartbreaker to Odessa at the Texan Dome January 19, missing two shots in the final seconds that would have won the game in regulation. The game went to overtime and Odessa won 78-71. The Lady Wranglers are winners of four in a row and have not lost since a 68-52 setback to WJCAC leading New Mexico.

The Lady Texans return home February 16 when they host Frank Phillips College on 'Think Pink' night. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the Texan Dome for the game and to enter a raffle for an Apple iPad2. Proceeds will benefit breast cancer awareness.
