SPC holds off Lady Plainsmen to pick up their first WJCAC victory

BORGER, Texas - Free throw shooting was the key in the South Plains College Lady Texans picking up their first conference victory Monday night as they were on target for their first 18 attempts and finished 25-of-29 to finish off the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen 71-54 in a game that was a bit closer than the final might indicate.
After taking a 31-20 advantage to the locker room, the Lady Texans extended their lead to 15 in the opening minutes in what looked like might be a one-sided rout. Minutes later South Plains saw their lead dwindle to two points after Frank Phillips went on a 15-2 run.

Again leading by only two points as the two teams approached the midway point of the second half, South Plains began an 8-0 scoring run that started with a couple of made free throws by Sydney HearnAshley Roberts then converted a layup on a fast-break and Stephanie Moore then took advantage of a second chance after rebounding a Roberts miss. Roberts then completed the scoring run by converting two free throws; giving SPC a 54-44 lead with less than 8-minutes remaining.

The Lady Plainsmen again cut the lead to four points, but this time South Plains College answered by scoring the final 13 points in the game to take a 71-54 victory. With the loss, Frank Phillips falls to 5-13 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Moore had a career night as she made 7-of-9 from the field and 12-of-13 attempts from the charity stripe to finish with a game high 26 points. She also pulled down a game high 19 rebounds while playing more than 35 minutes. Roberts added 15 points and freshman reserve Moneeka Carter came off the bench to have a big night, chipping in with another 15 points.

As a team the Lady Texans made 21-of-54 (.389) shots from the field and out-rebounded their opponents by a 55-28 margin.

The Lady Texans (4-15, 1-2) will be on the road again Thursday, January 26 when they travel to Hobbs, N.M. where they will face the Lady T-Birds of New Mexico Junior College (17-2, 2-0).
