Lady Texans halt skid with win over Northern Oklahoma

HOBBS, N.M. - The South Plains College Lady Texans defeated the Northern Oklahoma College Lady Mavericks 73-63 Friday afternoon on the second day of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) pre-conference tournament, snapping a seven game losing streak in the process.

Playing all 40-minutes, sophomore Ashley Roberts led all scorers with 22 points. Roberts made 6-of-14 attempts from beyond the arc and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line marking the 11th consecutive free throw she has made going back to the Lady Texans November 26 loss to Collin County. Roberts also chipped in with five assists and five steals.

Stephanie Moore recorded her second double-double of the season in Friday's victory, scoring 15 points and pulling down 14 rebounds, eight on the offensive end.

Kayla Turner and Shea Myatt each came close to recording double-doubles. Turner's five 3's helped her finish the game with 15 points in addition to nine rebounds. Myatt added eight points and recorded 10 rebounds.

The Lady Texans shot only 35-percent from the game, but crashed the boards hard as they out-rebounded the Lady Mavs 57-37 and 21-10 on the offensive end.

South Plains College (2-9) will now play host New Mexico JC (11-2) in the tournament's fifth place game. Currently ranked No. 16 in the NJCAA, New Mexico lost to Midland College (10-3) in the first round of the tournament. Game time is 3:30 p.m. (MST).
