Lady Texans blast Western Texas College by 17

LEVELLAND, Texas - The South Plains College Lady Texans received double digit scoring from four players - including sophomore Kelsey Canavan who recorded her ninth consecutive double-double - and went on to romp the Lady Westerners of Western Texas College 64-47 Thursday night in the Texan Dome. South Plains (16-7, 6-3) will next have the opportunity to move into second place within the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) when they travel to Odessa College (16-9, 6-2) Monday, February 14.

South Plains took a seven point lead, 19-12, by the midway point of the first half. Western Texas was able to work their way back into the game, however, and with three minutes to go in the first half the two teams were tied, 24-24.

That's when the Lady Texans heated up and shut their opponent down. Ashley Roberts and Raely Parada hit back-to-back three pointers to quickly put SPC back in front by six. Canavan picked up an offensive rebound after a missed shot by Lorie Romaine and laid it back in for two more points, and Roberts finished the half with another three point basket to complete an 11-0 Lady Texan run to end the half.

The Lady Westerners would not get back to within single digits until the midway point of the second half when they got to within seven points after a Tiffani Jones three pointer made the score 48-41.

That's as close as Western Texas would get as the Lady Texans outscored their opponent 16-6 to go on to the 64-47 victory.

Toi'Easha Cooper would lead the way for South Plains with a game high of 14 points, while making 7-of-10 shots from the field. Brittney Wilkerson made 6-of-8 shots for 13 points andKelsey Canavan added yet another double-double to her resume with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Lorie Romain added 10 points, while Raely Parada and Ashley Roberts each chipped in with nine and six points, respectively.
