Lady Texan win streak snapped by Midland College

MIDLAND, Texas - The South Plains College Lady Texans got double digit scoring figures from four players, but were outrebounded 21-7 on the offensive end and 52-30 overall as they fell to the NJCAA No. 15 ranked Midland College Lady Chaparrals (21-5, 6-2) 74-61 Monday night. The loss is SPC's first since their January 13 game against Midland, snapping a six game winning streak and dropping the Lady Texans to 15-7 overall and 5-3 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) play.

South Plains capitalized on 17 Midland turnovers in the first half and held the advantage, 30-26, as the teams went to the locker room at the end of the first half.

After Raely Parada and Toi'Easha Cooper sandwiched a couple buckets in between a Midland basket in the opening minutes of the second half, SPC held a six point lead. Midland then went on an 8-0 scoring to take the lead, 36-34.

Lorie Romaine hit a couple free throws to briefly tie the game, but a 21-8 scoring run by Midland would stretch their lead to 13 points with less than eight minutes to play.

Toi'Easha Cooper would lead SPC on a comeback when she scored seven points over a two minute period to help the Lady Texans to an 11-2 run that would get them to within four points, 61-57. Midland would answer the call with a 13-4 run to end the game.

Parada and Cooper scored 13 points each to lead the Lady Texans in scoring, and Kelsey Canavan recorded her ninth consecutive double-double - and 15th of the season - with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Lorie Romaine scored 10, while Ashley Roberts added nine.

The Lady Texans will return to action on Thursday, February 10 at 5:45 p.m. when they host Western Texas College at the Texan Dome. Holiday Inn Express of Levelland is the sponsor of the game and has donated great prizes and gift cards that will be given away. Also, the Levelland Acrospirit tumblers will be performing at halftime.
