Canavan breaks Swoopes' single game rebound record in win

HOBBS, N.M. - Sophomore Kelsey Canavan recorded her 16thdouble-double of the season, and 28th in her career as a Lady Texan, and in the process broke Sheryl Swoopes' single game rebound record by one when she worked overtime on the glass and finished with 23. Canavan also scored 13 points while playing 37 minutes to help lead South Plains College (14-6, 4-2) past New Mexico Junior College (18-5, 4-2) and into a crazy five-way tie for first place in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC). Swoopes had held the record since she pulled down 22 rebounds in January, 1990, against Phoenix College.

Raely Parada struck first in the second half with a made shot inside the paint and the Lady Texans never trailed again and led by as many as 11 points on two occasions, the latter coming after a put back by Canavan with 6:55 remaining on the clock.

South Plains would go on to cruise to a nine point victory, 69-60.

Ashley Roberts led all scorers with 20 points, while Parada and Lauren McKinney chipped in with 16 each. Roberts and Parada played the entire game.

With the victory, South Plains is now in a five-way tie for first place in the WJCAC. Entering tonight's contest, the Lady Texans had trailed Midland (19-5, 4-2) and the Lady T-Birds who each had only one loss. Midland fell to Odessa (14-9, 4-2) Monday night by the score of 69-65 and Howard College (18-5, 4-2), SPC's next opponent, improved their record with a 65-49 win over Frank Phillips.

The Lady Texans will look to knock Howard from the top of the standings when they host the Lady Hawks on Thursday, February 3 at the Texan Dome.
