SPC women take down Lady Plainsman

BORGER, Texas - Lauren McKinney scored 25 points by making 10-of-14 shots from the field, was a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe and just missed a double-double when she pulled down nine rebounds to help lead the Lady Texans to a 71-63 victory over Frank Phillips College on Monday night to improve to 12-6 overall and 3-2 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) play.

Kelsey Canavan and Toi'Easha Cooper both helped significantly to the cause by scoring double digits in both points and rebounds. Canavan dropped in 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, while Cooper added 12 and 12, respectively.

The Lady Texans opened strong by jumping out to a 14-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game and despite 19 first half turnovers, South Plains would enjoy a 17 point halftime lead, 39-22.

Frank Phillips opened up the second half by scoring six consecutive points to cut into the Lady Texan lead. Midway through, the Lady Plainsmen found themselves down by only eight points, but McKinney scored five points to push the Lady Plainsmen deficit back to 13, 58-45.

Despite a modest comeback attempt that would see Frank Phillips get back to within six points in the closing seconds, South Plains College was never threatened again and cruised on to the eight point victory.

South Plains College outrebounded the Lady Plainsmen 51-38, but 33 Lady Texan turnovers is likely the reason Frank Phillips was able to keep it somewhat interesting.

The Lady Texans made 26-of-49 (.531) shots from the field as well as 17-of-25 (.680) shots from the free throw line. Frank Phillips made only 27-of-80 (.338) and 6-of-16 (.375) attempts from the charity stripe.

South Plains College will return to the Texan Dome on Thursday, January 27th in a non-conference matchup with Clarendon College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
