Second half surge sends Lady Texans past Western Texas

SNYDER, Texas - Kelsey Canavan scored a team high 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field, and also pulled down a game high 12 rebounds to help lead the Lady Texans to a 68-59 victory over Western Texas College Monday night in Snyder.

Thanks in large part to a total of 24 first half points - 14 from Canavan and 10 from Raely Parada - South Plains led at the half by the score of 32-28.

A 5-0 run by the Lady Texans to start the second half gave SPC a nine point lead. Western Texas responded and cut their deficit to a single point, 39-38, with 14 minutes, 13 seconds to go in the game.

The Lady Westerners would not get any closer as SPC scored 21 of the next 24 points to take a commanding 19 point lead with just under seven minutes remaining on the clock, 60-41.

In the end, Western Texas would work to make the final score somewhat respectable as South Plains College would return to Levelland with a 68-59 win to improve to 10-6 overall and 1-2 in competition within the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC).

As a team the Lady Texans made 28-of-64 shots from the field and held their opponent to only 9-of-35 in the second half.

The Lady Texans will return to action on Thursday, January 20th when they host the Odessa College Lady Wranglers (12-7, 2-0) at the Texan Dome in a game presented by Best Western Inns and Suites of Levelland.
