Roswell—The South Plains College men's cross country team captured the Region V Cross Country Championship Saturday in Roswell, New Mexico.
Hassan Abdi and Kelvin Keter dominated the field of 33 runners, capturing the first and second spots for the Texans. Abdi took first place with an overall time of 24:28, while Keter finished second with a time of 24:54.
South Plains' Nicholas Rotich also finished in the top five with a time of 25:07, good enough for third place overall. Jose Silva finished sixth for SPC with a time of 25:52, while Atem Akok placed seventh with a time of 26:02, and Connor Hughes' time of 26:22 was good enough for eighth place.
El Paso Community College finished in second place overall with a score of 34, followed by Ranger College, Western TC and Odessa College.
In the women's event, the Lady Texans placed third with an overall score of 78.
Sasha-Gay Whyte placed fifth overall with a time of 19:17, and Kassidi Jones' time of 20:14 was good enough for 11th place for the Lady Texans. Heather Moldonado finished in 19th place with a time of 21:12 for SPC, and Megan Kinsey's time of 21:30 took 21st.
The Texans and Lady Texans will have their next competition when they travel to the NJCAA National Cross Country Championships in Ames, Iowa on Saturday, November 14.
