Lott paces Lady Texans to SPC Invitational team title

LEVELLAND - Sophomore Darroneshia Lott cruised to her second individual race victory of the season to help lead the Lady Texan cross country team to the team title at the SPC Cross Country Invitational Saturday, Oct. 13.

Lott's time of 18 minutes, 27.26 seconds was nearly 20 seconds better than the next finisher on the 5,000 meter course and the first of four Lady Texans to finish inside the top 10 as Lott was followed by Ekaterina Miroshnikova (19:31.88) in fourth;Desreen Montague (19:51.89) in fifth; and Maddie Kauffman(20:26.03) in ninth.

Sarah Peterson (20:42.54) was the fifth Lady Texan to cross the line and finished just outside the top 10 in 11th. Brittany Letts (21:06.08) and Melina Morantes (22:12.24) also competed for the SPC Lady Texans.

The SPC women combined for a total team score of 26 points, bettering second place El Paso by 17 points.

The Texans were led by freshman Zach Daniel who completed the 8,000 meter course in 27:13.31, finishing 10th. He was followed closely by Brandon Bernal (27:16.06) andCordaryl Whitehead (27:16.92) in 11th and 12th.

Eladio Perez (27:24.44) and Kin Scott (27:43.44) finished 14th and 16th, respectively, for the Texans who finished second in the team standings with 58 points.

South Plains will now turn their attention to post season competition as they will travel to El Paso for the Region 5 Championships Saturday, Oct. 27. On Nov. 10 SPC will compete at the NJCAA Cross Country Championships in Ina, Ill. before hosting the NJCAA Half-Marathon Championships Nov. 17 in Levelland to complete the season.
