CANYON, Texas - Freshman Darroneshia Lott took top honors at the 2011 West Texas A&M Buffalo Stampede contested at the Don Harrington Camp in Canyon, leading the Lady Texan cross country team to a runner-up performance in their first meet of the season.

Lott, a native of Florida, completed the 5,000-meter course with a time of 19 minutes, 3 seconds.

Chris Beene, SPC's eighth year cross country coach was impressed with what he saw from Lott in her first meet.

"I thought it was a good start to her freshman year," said Beene. "She won by 11 seconds and I am certain she could have run much faster if someone had been pushing her.

"She (Lott) seemed to kind of fall asleep in the middle of the race, but finished strong."

Returning All-America performer Kirsten Taylor was the second Lady Texan to cross the line, finishing fourth overall with a time of 19:37, followed by freshman Michaela Johnson in sixth, clocking 20:04. Sophomore Tiffany Matthews (21:09) was 13th and Kateland Maddox(22:50), a freshman from Amarillo, rounded out the Lady Texan scoring finishing 20th.Brittany Shedd also ran and finished 21st.

The Lady Texans finished with 43 team points, 18 behind host West Texas A&M.

Isacc Placencia led the way for the Texans with a ninth place finish and a time of 16:31 over the 5,000 meter course. Teammates Jonathan Lira (16:43) and Bretton Villarreal (16:52)were the next two competitors to cross the line in 10th and 11th.

Roblet Muhudin (17:04), a returning All-America from 2010, finished 14th while Anthonio Mascoll (17:51) was the Texans' fifth runner at 23rd, just nipping teammate Rene Escobedo who finished with an identical time.

The Texans finished third overall in the team standings with 58 points.

Beene said Thursday he was interested in using this early season meet to evaluate the fitness of his team.

"I feel pretty good about where our women are right now and our men have some work to do," Beene said. "We had to test ourselves to find out where we are. We have been working hard, so I know we are a little beat up."

The SPC cross country teams will get back to work before competing again next Friday, September 16 in the Texas Tech Red Raider Open held at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock.
