South Plains track and field snag four event titles Friday in Lubbock

LUBBOCK — The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams snagged four event titles Friday at the Texas Tech Red Raider Invitational at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.

South Plains has acquired 31 national qualifying marks after two meets and will be back on the track Feb. 7-8 at the Charlie Thomas Invitational on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station.  

South Plains Freshman Rosemary Chukwuma won the women's 200 meters, besting Texas Tech's Jadsie Warden with a time of 24.00 to take the top spot. Chukwuma would then take first overall in the women's 60 meters, clocking a final time of 7.33.

The Texans picked up an event title in the men's 400 meters as sophomore Moitalel Mpoke posted the fasted time in 46.32, with Jalen Brown of Arkansas placing second in 47.33. Sophomore All-American Dorcus Ewoi won the women's 800 meters for the Lady Texans, crossing the line in 2:14.21.

"Rosemary ran well and ran a good race in prelims and turned around and ran a personal best and the top time in the nation," South Plains head coach Erik Vance said. "Moitalel ran very well in the 400 and to do that this early in the season is great. We're up to 31 qualifiers so far after two weeks, and we're really pleased with that and need to improve each time out."

In the men's 3000 meters, freshman Abdirizak Ibrahim placed second overall, crossing the line in 8:43.79. The Texans' Romaine Beckford earned an eighth place finish in the men's high jump, clearing 6' 8" on his fourth attempt. South Plains freshman Tony McNeal placed third in the men's long jump, posting a final mark of 24' 3.75".

The Lady Texans earned a fifth place finish in the women's mile run as sophomore standout Gladys Jemaiyo crossed the line in a time of 5:10.83. In the women's shot put, freshman Silva Tafiti placed fourth with a throw of 47' 9". The Texans capped the meet winning their heat in the men's 4x400 as Khaleb McRae Mpoke, Issac Hastings and Donnis Blue clocked a dazzling time of 3:11.19.
