2016 NJCAA Track and Field Outdoor National Championship Day 1 Recap

LEVELLAND—Day one of the 2016 NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship meet went as scheduled on Tuesday in Levelland despite the rainy weather conditions which remained consistent throughout the day.

Tuesday saw the men and women begin their multi-events, which will conclude on Wednesday following the women's long jump, javelin and 800 meters that are set to begin at 10 a.m. Field events also began Tuesday morning and will run from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Running events will also continue Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. beginning with the women's 4x100 relay, and will conclude at 6:30 p.m. with the men's 4x400 relays.

South Plains made a strong showing on day one, with Fabian Edoki earing All-American honors in the men's triple jump after soaring 51' 11¾", finishing second behind only Iowa Central's Jah-Nhai Perinchief. Oklahoma State signee Hassan Abdi placed second in the men's 10000 meters, earning the sophomore from Amarillo All-American honors after posting a final time of 31:07.53.

The Texans would then go on to take fifth in the 4x800 meter relay after posting a final time of 7:54.74, with Allen County, Monroe College and Iowa Central taking the first three spots. In the women's 4x800 meter relay, the Lady Texans went on to place fourth with a time of 9:41.98, with Monroe College, New Mexico Junior College and Iowa Central taking the top three positions.
