South Plains Rodeo earns a pair of top 10 finishes in Perryton

PERRYTON — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams were back on the saddle this weekend at the Frank Phillips College rodeo which saw the orange and blue earn a pair of top 10 finishes.

The Lady Texans finished fourth overall with 180 team points, while the Texans placed 10th with 110 team points.

Ranked ninth in the Southwest Region in goat tying, sophomore Jenna Dallyn added 155 points to her season total, finishing first overall thanks to a 16.4 overall average. Dallyn won the long round with a time of 7.6, which she followed up with a short round time of 8.8.

Alex Odle entered the weekend ranked first in the region in barrel racing and rode her way into Saturday's finals yet again. Odle ran a long round time of 17.66 followed by a 28.88 in the short round to finish 10th overall and pick up 25 points. Freshman Kody Criswell won the long round of the breakaway roping event with a time of 2.2. Criswell missed in the short round but managed to finish the weekend with a seventh place overall finish for the Lady Texans.

"Kody had a great showing in the long round of the breakaway roping and Jenna smoked the field in goat tying which we're really proud of," South Plains head coach Kerry Doster said. "Alex hit a couple barrels in the final round but was still able to pick up 25 points which will help her out as the season goes on."

Ranked eighth in the region coming in, South Plains' Zack Kirkpatrick wrestled his way to a second place finish in steer wrestling. Kirkpatrick ran a 5.1 in the long and short rounds to finish with a 10.2 average and 100 points.

Jhett Trenary paired up with Bo Yaussi of North Central Texas College in the team roping event. The duo clocked a 6.5 in the long round and missed in the short round to earn a seventh-place finish and 10 points.

"I think Zack had his best performance in steer wrestling since he's been here with us," Doster said. "He was able to finish second overall and on all in all had a great weekend. We're going to be competing at Texas Tech next weekend and hopefully, we can go out and have another good week."

South Plains will return to the arena on Thursday when they take a short trip to Lubbock for the Texas Tech University Rodeo on Oct. 19-21 at the Texas Tech Equestrian Center.
