South Plains earns top finishes at Western Texas College Rodeo

SNYDER—The South Plains College rodeo teams rode their way to another impressive outing over the weekend at the 2017 Western Texas College Rodeo.

Zack Kirkpatrick kicked things off for the Texans with a fifth place finish in the tiedown roping event. The Crosbyton native used a long round time of 9.0 followed by a short round time of 11.1 to rack up 65 points.

The Texans dominated the steer wrestling event as Chet Boren and Cameron McCarley took the top two spots overall. Boren placed first with his long time of 4.1 followed by a short round of 3.9 tallying 150 points. McCarley placed second with 110 points using a long round time of 5.4 and a short time of 3.8.

The Texans finished sixth overall in final team results with 215 points. Tarleton State placed first with 543, while Western Texas College took second with 410 and Ranger placed third with 260.

Tarleton State also placed first in the women's division with 345 team points, as Eastern New Mexico University took second with 215, and NMJC placed third with 125. The Lady Texans were unable to score over the weekend but will get another opportunity when they travel to Big Spring for the Howard College Rodeo on April 6-8.
