South Plains earns top finishes at Tarleton Rodeo

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS — The South Plains College rodeo teams were back in action this weekend at the Tarleton State University rodeo which saw South Plains walk away with a pair of top finishes.

The Lady Texans came into the weekend's stint sitting at the number four position in the regional standings, trailing only Texas Tech, Eastern New Mexico and Tarleton who currently hold the top three positions. The Texans currently sit at 13th with a total of 540 team points racked up on the season.

Kortney McReynolds, a sophomore from Ruidoso, New Mexico, finished first overall in the women's goat tying competition after her score of seven in the long run and 7.2 in the finals, giving her an average of 14.20 and a total of 145 points. Also earning points for the Lady Texans was freshman Rainy Robinson, who finished with 40 points in the women's barrel racing competition, good enough for a sixth place finish for the Caldwell, Idaho native.

On the men's side, sophomore Coy Surrett was the lone point getter for the Texans, as the Buhl, Idaho product finished with 130 total points in the men's steer wrestling event, good enough for a second place finish, trailing only Eastern New Mexicos' Hank Filippin, who finished with 140 points.

With the regular season now complete, the upcoming regional standings will decide which competitors will get a chance to compete at the national competition. The last regional standings released on March 23 had three competitors from South Plains in contention for a national bid.

Those athletes include: Shay Spitz who had accumulated 805 total points and sat in third place overall in women's barrel racing; Kortney McReynolds who held the 5th position in the goat tying competition with 247.50 points; and Riley Hayes who sat in 7th in men's steer wrestling with 230 total points.
