#2 Texans fall to Midland 70-69 Thursday

LEVELLAND — The second-ranked South Plains College men's basketball team dropped its final conference game Thursday night at the Texan Dome, falling to Midland 70-69.

South Plains ends the regular season with a record of 28-2, 14-2 in the WJCAC, and will play as the No. 1 seed from the west against the No. 4 seed from the north on Thursday, March 14 at 1 p.m. at the Region V Tournament in Weatherford. The full bracket will be released on Friday, March 8.

South Plains led 69-67 with 10 seconds left in the contest, as Midland had the final shot. The Chaparrals put the ball into the hands of Emilis Butkus, who knocked down a 3 as time expired to give Midland the win in the final seconds.

South Plains shot 38.3 percent from the floor and 22.6 percent from distance, led by sophomore Jabori Mcghee who finished with a team-high 20 points and six boards. Jermahri Hill netted 14 points and three rebounds, while Jalen Hampton finished with 13 points for South Plains.

Midland shot a 45.6 percent clip from the floor and was 10 of 27 from distance in the contest. Emilis Butkus led the Chaparrals with a game-high 23 points over 39 minutes. Jaden Kempson tallied 12 points, five assists, and five boards, while Jarren Cook chipped in 10 points coming off the bench.
