#2 Texans pummel Frank Phillips 100-67, capture Western Junior College Athletic Conference title Thursday in Borger

BORGER — The second-ranked South Plains College men's basketball team ended a seven-year drought Thursday night, as the Texans pummeled Frank Phillips 100-67 to capture the Western Junior College Athletic Conference title, their first since the 2017 season.

With the win, South Plains improves to 27-1 on the season and 13-1 in league play and earns the No. 1 seed from the west to the Region 5 Tournament March 14-16 in Weatherford. First things first, South Plains will be back home on Monday night when they host No. 12 Odessa at 7:30 p.m. at the Texan Dome. Admission to the game is free, the first 150 fans will receive free t-shirts, and all fans will receive free hot dogs and hamburgers.

Jalen Forrest led all scorers in the contest, pouring in 27 points and handed out six assists over 35 minutes. Forrest finished eight of 13 from the field, two of four from the 3-point line, and was nine for nine from the free throw line. Malique Ewin netted 20 points to go along with seven boards and five assists, while Kerwin Prince and Jalen Hampton each had 18 points.

The Texans shot a 54.7 percent clip from the field in the contest, knocking down seven 3s, and finished 23 of 25 from the free throw line. South Plains flustered Frank Phillips defensively, as the Plainsmen shot just 38 percent from the field and were five of 22 from distance.
