Hawks clip #1 Texans 76-69 Thursday in Big Spring

BIG SPRING — The South Plains College men's basketball team suffered its first loss in 27 outings on Thursday, falling to Howard 76-69 at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.

South Plains moves to 26-1 on the year and 12-1 in conference play and will be back on the road on Feb. 29 when they travel to Borger for a 7:30 p.m. tip against Frank Phillips.

The Texans failed to find a rhythm on the offensive end, shooting just 36 percent from the field, was five of 22 from distance, and just 20-34 from the free throw line. Howard shot 51 percent from the floor, was five of 17 from 3, and 21-24 from the charity stripe.

Jermahri Hill led South Plains with 28 points and six boards, connecting on eight of his 20 attempts from the floor. Malique Ewin finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Jalen Hampton added nine points and six boards.

Howard's Joey Madimba led all scorers with 29 points and 13 rebounds, pouting in nine of 18 shots from the hardwood and was four of eight from distance. Nate Deer netted 17 points and six rebounds for the Hawks, while Alexzaye Johnson chipped in 13 points and dished out a game-high seven assists.
