No. 5 Texans clip Chaparrals 72-58 Thursday in Midland

MIDLAND — Gaige Prim recorded his 17th double-double of the season, tallying 17 points and 15 rebounds as the No. 5-ranked South Plains College men's basketball team clipped Midland College 72-58 Thursday night at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center.

South Plains improves to 18-3 on the year and 7-2 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference and will return home on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. tip against Frank Phillips College on Think Pink night at the Texan Dome, sponsored by Covenant Hospital of Levelland.

Prim was 5 of 16 from the field over 34 minutes and buried 7 of 8 attempts from the charity stripe against the Chaparrals. Sophomore Trey Wade led the Texans in scoring with 18 points to go along with nine boards and a pair of blocked shots.

Jonah Antonio and Deon Barett each netted nine points for South Plains as the duo combined for six 3s in the contest. Sophomore Charles Jennings provided six points off the bench for the Texans while Christian Wilson and Chris Efretuei each had five points.

South Plains shot over 44 percent from the floor including a 42 percent clip from the perimeter netting eight 3s in the contest. Midland (7-15, 2-7) shot just 39 percent from the field and were 6 of 15 from behind the arc while reaching the foul line just six times.

The Texans dominated inside, outrebounding the Chaparrals 43-21 on the glass and scored 20 points inside the paint. Elijah Lufile led Midland with 21 points and six rebounds, sinking 9 of 20 attempts in 39 minutes of action. Montre Gipson poured in 11 points and grabbed four boards while Eman Eman chipped in eight points and Jamani Barrett had six.
