No. 2 South Plains scrapes New Mexico Military Institute 84-61 Thursday in Roswell

ROSWELL, NM — Gaige Prim recorded his seventh consecutive double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds as the second-ranked South Plains College men's basketball team improved to 4-0 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference on Thursday in an 84-61 scraping of New Mexico Military Institute at the Cahoon Armory Gymnasium.

Prim finished 6 of 9 from the field as the Texans improved to 15-1 on the year and will return home to the Texan Dome on Monday for a conference matchup with New Mexico Junior College at 7:30 p.m. The game will be streaming live at spctexans.com and Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action.

South Plains shot 55 percent from the floor against the Broncos including a 65.4 percent mark in the second half and also knocked down five 3s in the final stint. Trey Wade netted 12 points and 10 boards for the orange and blue while Deon Barett bucketed a team-high 19 points and five assists, leading all scorers with five 3s, finishing 6 of 8 from the floor and 5 of 7 from behind the arc.

Sophomore Chris Orlina knicked down 8 of 10 attempts from the hardwood as the Newport News, Virginia native finished with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Texans. Jonah Antonio tallied eight points and four assists for South Plains while Koray Gilbert netted six points and three boards.

The Broncos (5-12, 0-4) shot just 37.5 percent from the floor and 27 percent in the second half. New Mexico Military Institute struggled from the free throw line, bucketing just 9 of their 18 attempts. Isaiah Francis led the Broncos with 20 points and four rebounds while Jermane Carter finished with 12 points and seven boards and Cyriaque totaled 10 points and two rebounds.
