Texans to tipoff against North Lake College on Friday at 7 p.m. as part of SPC Classic

LEVELLAND — The No. 3-ranked South Plains College men's basketball team will host the SPC Classic this weekend beginning on Friday at the Texan Dome.

The Texans will tipoff at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Texan Dome against North Lake College, the defending Div. III men's basketball national champions who are currently ranked No. 1 in the country in the Div. III polls. Following Friday's contest, South Plains will take on Collin County at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

South Plains enters the weekend with a 2-2 record after splitting two games last weekend. The Texans fell to No. 22 Arizona Western 90-88 on Friday but bounced back on Saturday with a 104-78 win over Coastal Bend College.

By the numbers:

South Plains is averaging 85.5 points per game and is shooting 51.5 percent from the field, as Jamir Coleman, Deshawn Corprew and Jordan Brangers are each averaging double-digit scoring figures after four games. The Texans will look to clamp down on the defensive end as they are giving up nearly 80 points per game as opposing offenses are shooting nearly 42 percent from the field.

North Lake comes in with a 3-1 record with their sole loss coming to defending Div. I national champs Hutchinson Community College. The Blazers are averaging 85.3 points per game and are shooting 46 percent from the floor.

Darrell Watson leads North Lake on the offensive end as the sophomore is averaging 14.7 points per game and shooting 48 percent from the floor. The Blazers have forced opposing offenses to shoot just 18 percent from the 3-point line on the year, which could play a factor in Friday night's matchup.
